If you are looking to attract different types of birds in to your yard and heated bird bath, you should consider a fruit feeder. A fruit feeder is simply a bird feeder that you supply with fruit instead of seeds or other bird feed. There are different types that you can buy, although they are simple to make also. You just need a simple place to put fruit, whether it’s in a bowl, hanging from dowel rods, or both.

There are many different types of birds that love to eat fruit, such as Orioles, Bluebirds, Robins, and Woodpeckers. These birds will add color to your yard and give you a chance to see some birds that may normally not visit you. Once they start to come around, they will most likely visit often and make use of your bird bath also. Like most of us, birds are sometimes picky and maybe certain foods will only attract certain birds. The fun part is that you can try different types of fruits and see which birds come. Once you get an idea of what they like, you can start to get a pattern of what birds will be in your yard and when. If you really enjoy bird watching or just feel good doing your part to feed them, you may wish to have several bird feders. You can put seed in one and fruit or raisins in the other. Of course, you may attract more than just birds, though. Squirrels, chipmunks, and raccoons love to raid these feeders also and you should hang them from a tree if you want to limit the accessibility. Watching other animals can be just as much fun though.

We have a few squirrels that are hilarious to watch as they jump on top of the bird feeder to get at the seeds. Once one lands on it, it will spin around quickly as the squirrel hangs on for dear life until it slows down. After it slows and the squirrel gets its bearings, it will throw the seeds out and on to the ground to another squirrel that is stationed below. It’s actually pretty creative and really fun to watch. My kids always get a kick out of it!

Thanks so much for the info. I was never aware that woodpeckers liked to eat fruit. I really like woodpeckers and I think I will have to use this information to attract some to my yard. Thanks! :)
